1. Starting a M+Guardian Web Session

Logging in
M+Guardian Web Interface requires you to identify yourself as a user with a username or email address and password. From the Login screen you can also change the language of the display.

To log in:
1. Open your internet browser and to go http://pistars1.cpmc.columbia.edu.
2. Enter your username or email address and GroupWise (email) password (*The password is the same one you use when logging into your GroupWise e-mail ).

**Select either the respective language tab to change the display language of the web interface.

3. Click Login.

Once you have logged in successfully, you will see the Summary page. This page
displays a complete list of email messages in your quarantine by category. Email
messages are quarantined into the following categories under the corresponding
category tab:

a. Spam There are several categories of spam that can be filtered into quarantine. Categories and the level of spam filtering applied are determined by the system administrator. (Note: Spam is the only category that you can manage).

b. Virus A virus is any suspect email that is trapped by the dedicated antivirus engine. (Note: This information is being blocked and will not be quarantined.)

c. Files A blocked file attachment is any file type that is identified as a threat by the system administrator. (Note: This type of email includes attachments such as *.exe, *.bat, etc- These emails will be blocked not quarantined.) You can click on Report at the bottom of the screen to request the attachment to be released.

d. Content Forbidden content is any type of prohibited content containing words or expressions that the system administrator has banned.

Getting Familiar with the M+Guardian Web Interface
Use the navigation tabs on the left of the interface to open the corresponding category.

By default, every time you start a new quarantine session, the Spam tab is displayed.

There are several options for managing your quarantined Spam messages.

In order to perform these functions you must first highlight the message you would
like to manage in the list by left-clicking on the message.
a. Release – This option allows you to release the message from quarantine to your Inbox.
b. Allow – This option allows you to add an email address to your Allow List directly. Click the Allow icon to add an address to your Allow List. In the dialog box that appears, click the email address you want to add. You can add the email address to your Allow List, or you can add the entire domain. If you want to add both to your Allow List, choose the Allow icon again and repeat the procedure. Email from senders on your Allow List will always be sent to your inbox (except if the message contains a virus).
c. Block – This option allows you to add an email address to your Block List directly from any of the navigational tabs. Click the Block icon to add an address to your Block List. In the dialog box that appears, click the email address you want to add. You can add the email address to your Block List, or you can add the entire domain. If you want to add both to your Block List, choose Block icon again and repeat the procedure. Email from addresses that appear on your Block List will never be sent to your quarantine.
d. Report – This option allows you to forward a copy of an email message to the system administrator directly from any of the navigational tabs. Occasionally, messages may inadvertently be identified as spam. These messages are known as false positive messages. False positive messages can be released to your Inbox (by using the Release feature on the Spam tab) and reported to the system administrator. Click the Report icon to report the email address to the system administrator. In the dialog box that appears, customize text to accompany the email, and click Send. The system administrator may then report this message as a false positive and update the M+ Guardian spam definitions. Note: To reduce the amount of
false positives you receive, you may also add the email address or domain name to your Allow List so that messages from this source will not be quarantined in future.
e. Delete – This option allows you to delete the message. Click the Delete icon to delete the email message from your quarantine.
f. View – This option allows you to view message details directly from any of the navigational tabs. Click the View icon to view the message safely in your quarantine. You can then decide what message action you want to take.
g. Delete All – This option allows you to delete all the email messages in your quarantine with one click of your mouse. The Delete All option is available from the Spam, Virus, Files and Content tabs.
